How to create and manage a Fantasy Cricket League for your club

Excellent - so you’re thinking of running a Fantasy Cricket League for your cricket club?

It’s a great way to introduce some banter between the players and teams but the potential admin involved should not be underestimated! In my experience to run a great Fantasy League there are 6 key stages:

1. Grade the players
Each player has to be assigned a value (1-10) and a position (bowler, batsman, all-rounder or wicket keeper). To avoid most of the inevitable whining it’s important to nominate some key figures (captains, coach etc.) to review your draft list. Next make sure you position the assigned value as the ability to score within the Fantasy Cricket League not a judgment of players’ cricketing prowess!

2. Create the Fantasy Cricket League
Decide on all the ways the players can score points (bowling, batting, fielding and wicket keeping) and are awarded minus points (ducks etc), then create a spreadsheet of all your fixtures and put in all the formulas. Alternatively look for available options online. Sports social networking site tourlegends.com provides a free Fantasy Cricket League Application The advantage is that the points scoring system and calculations are already set-up so it saves time and makes it easier to manage the next stages.

3. Get fantasy team entries
If adopting the spreadsheet route, circulate the spreadsheet either via email or via a document sharing service such as Google docs. To manage more easily create separate tabs for each player’s team. Upon return check whether each fantasy cricket team consists of the required number of batsmen, bowlers, all-rounders and a wicket keeper. Alternatively pre-register all your players to tourlegends.com by uploading a list from a spreadsheet and get everyone to log-on for free to nominate their fantasy XI. The tourlegends Fantasy Cricket league application requires each team manager to nominate 4 batsmen, 2 all-rounders, 1 wicket keeper and 4 bowlers.

4. Add and communicate results
This is where discipline and admin comes in! Work out how you’re going to get the match results each week and update your spreadsheet or enter the results online. Circulate your spreadsheet on a regular basis so the team managers know their current standing and watch the increased level of banter at the sidelines! If you’re managing your Fantasy Cricket League online everyone can view the standings 24/7 the minute you’ve added new results. In addition to the standings players can view
the bowling and batting averages as well as the total number of catches, maidens, ducks and stumpings by player and by team. The latter is useful if you’ve got players from multiple cricket teams in the same fantasy cricket league.

5. Maintain momentum through transfer windows
At suitable times during the cricket season you should allow players to swop some players in their fantasy cricket teams. Some players may be stuck as the eternal 12th man or may have got injured. It does mean another round of circulating your spreadsheet and make sure you double check how many transfers everyone has done (tip: use the ‘track changes’ or ‘compare spreadsheets’ functions). Alternatively manage your transfer windows online: the application automatically limits the number of transfers to whatever you’ve decided and the transfer window is only open for the exact date(s) and times you’ve set.

6. Announcing the winner
Double-check your faithful spreadsheet before you announce the winner – your calculations will be scrutinised! If using tourlegends you can also send a virtual trophy (engraved with name) or other funny virtual animated gift to the winner. To advertise next season’s fantasy cricket league do make sure to make a big fuss of the winner preferably with a proper presentation at your end-of-season dinner.

The start of the cricket season is clearly the best time to get a Club fantasy cricket league started, so with the Southern Hemisphere gearing up for summer cricket action let’s get the banter started both on the pitch and online!

Do share how you and your club manage your fantasy cricket league: all tips & tricks welcome!
